Villages in Mortimer Country

Here are a few of the Mortimer villages, all are picturesque, with great village inns and places to visit.

• Aymestrey sited mid way along The Mortimer Trail in the Lugg Valley. Visit the Norman Church with a beautiful rood screen, Croft Ambrey hill fort, Eat at the Riverside Inn.
• Brampton Bryan – owned by the Harley Family since the 14th century, the house is surrounded by a magnificent Yew hedge. Visit St. Barnabas Church with its hammer beam roof, taken from the castle. Site of a famous siege during the Civil war; Lady Brilliana defended the castle from the Royalists siege. Visit Aardvark Books & Café and walks to the Toposcope on top of Harley’s Mountain.
• Kingsland centred around the village green and church. Location of the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross on Candlemas Day, 2nd February 1461. A key battle in the Wars of the Roses. Luctonians Rugby club – top quality rugby and county cricket and outdoor adventure at Oaker Wood Leisure
• Leintwardine original roman settlement of Bravonium and Watling street. St Mary Magdalene Church, 18th century bridge with village Green and the Lion Hotel. The Sun Inn unique surviving Parlour pub – unchanged since the 1930s. River walks and bird watching and fly fishing.
• Shobdon has a unique church featuring rococo and “Strawberry Hill Gothick” and Norman arches in surrounding parkland. It is also home to Shobdon Airfield Great for watching small planes with good wartime style café.
• Wigmore is dominated by the romantic ruins of Wigmore Castle, There is also a grand Norman church and the Norman Burgage street layout is still visible. Now this is a busy farming village centred on its school and community run village shop, two pubs and a nature reserve.
